This course will focus on critical thinking and 研究-based writing through comparative and interdisciplinary analysis. Alongside lectures and class discussion, the study of representative great works of Western and non-Western literature from Antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance will emphasize the 文学, 文化, and religious significance of these texts. Co-requisite: 因此201年; permission from Academic Advising is needed to take 201年曾 as an unlinked course.

Social and 文化 variables in speech communication processes and strategies for resolving communication problems in inter文化 settings with an emphasis on variables such as perception, 角色, language codes, and nonverbal communication will be examined in this course.

The reception of classical antiquity depends on both the stories the ancients told themselves, as well as their interpretation and reinscription in subsequent times and places. This course traces the debt moderns owe to the earliest recorded stories that shaped civilizations, both to appreciate the stories in their own historical context as well as consider the responses (both those that identify with antiquity and those that assume its alienation) of succeeding eras, culminating in critical consideration of contemporary 文化 evocation of the classical tradition. Prerequisite: 因此201年 or 因此202年 or HST 201.

In this capstone course students will meet with an instructor once per week in order to formulate, 研究, and discuss an appropriate topic for their written project. Topics must be interdisciplinary, combining their emphasis within the major with another discipline within the major. Prerequisite: Liberal 艺术s major and senior standing.

MUS 352: 音乐 of World Cultures - This course will introduce students to the study of music as a universal 文化 phenomenon and the discipline of ethnomusicology with exposure to the musical and 社会 aspects of folk, traditional, and art music of regions from Asia, 非洲, Middle East, 欧洲, Latin America, and North America. Experience in music is encouraged but not required.

MUS 482: 音乐 Cultures: 音乐al Expression in Christianity - This course will survey of the role, development, and function of music in the Christian church from its roots in the Old Testament to the present day, with attention given to biblical, theological, 社会, and 文化 considerations. Offered alternate years.

This course will provide an overview of the various conventions, 形式, 风格, and genres of the theatre, including principles of play analysis and exploration of theatre criticism from dramaturgical, 文学, and 文化 perspectives through the thematic discussions of representative plays. This survey course of the major themes of the political and 文化 history of the Eastern world from its origins until modern times will focus on the Chinese and Japanese 文化 traditions with some attention to other Asian motifs and an emphasis on an understanding and appreciation of the Eastern worldview and ethos.

Basic theories and approaches to the scholarly study of significant popular movements and customs in modern Western civilization will be presented in this course with special attention paid to the evolution of media and its effect on group identity, especially American popular culture in the 20th century. Offered alternate years.

This introductory course into the lands, 国人民, and cultures of the Middle East from antiquity to modern times, will include the role of religion in shaping 社会 and political institutions, and the influence of Islamic thought on the Arab world and conflicts in the contemporary Middle East. This survey course of U.S. history from colonial times to the present will include the political, 经济, 社会, and 文化 development at each phase of the country's growth and progress through the study of colonization, independence, early nationhood, sectional strife culminating in the Civil War, reconstruction, 经济 expansion, 繁荣, 抑郁症, imperialism, 改革, two world wars, and contemporary tensions.

The emergence of 欧洲 from the early Middle Ages to the Italian Renaissance will be examined in this course including the feudal society, the Christian church, cities and commerce, art and learning, and the rise of kings and nation states. Particular attention will be given to 欧洲's Greek and Roman legacy as transmitted by the Byzantine and Islamic civilizations. Prerequisite: HST 201 or HST 202 or 因此201年 or 因此202年. Offered alternate years.

欧洲 from the 14th to the 17th century, the transitional period between medieval and modern history, will be examined in this course including the Italian Renaissance, the Northern Renaissance, the Lutheran Reformation, the Calvinist and Anglican Reformations, and the Roman Catholic Counter Reformation. Prerequisite: HST 201 or HST 202 or 因此201年 or 因此202年. Offered alternate years.

This course integrates various political, 社会, 经济, and 文化 phases of 欧洲's history from the 18th century to the present, including the French Revolution, industrialization, imperialism, the unification of Italy and Germany, 共产主义, fascism; the two world wars, and the Cold War. It will also trace the major scientific, 文学, and artistic developments through this era.

This course will focus on the 18th century 欧洲 and America from the French Revolution to the fall of Napoleon; the expansion of education, 科学, and philosophy; the growth of the middle class; and the beginnings of industrialism. Offered alternate years.

The history of California from earliest times to the present with an emphasis on its Hispanic heritage will be the focus of this course.
